Do you ever get the feeling ...

That while someone is asking you questions,

they are not always listening to your answers.

Hipster Paddington Bear - it's a thing

The look this autumn in Europe.  Paddington bear coat, undercut, desert boots with white socks. Rocking. Said nobody with any fashion forwardness. Or said someone who didn't pack adequately. Or both.

How to peel an orange

Conversely, how not to peel an orange. It's a little like she peeled it with a hammer.

Chit chat

It went from Bluebird (one word) to Blue Ivy, to the science of magpies. Did you know they prefer to swoop redheads and people riding bikes? Then to Doodlemans (or is that Doodlemen?), Panda-anus and possums on poles. Mix in some analysis of BeyoncĂ© and her relationship with Jay Z, throw in a potential conspiracy theory and there you have tonights dinner party conversation.

Oh. And the Spice Girls documentary is great - not just interesting, but educational too.

Draft

These words were written about a year ago and stayed in my draft folder all that time. I stumbled across them tonight and remembering back to when I wrote them, and decided it was time they were either deleted or said out loud.

Sometimes it is the imperfections that actually makes something perfect.

Today

Today I was surprised by how I was not overwhelmed by some pretty big things, but then taken aback at how hurt I was by the smaller things. That really took me by surprise. Then a far away friend just let me be - over the phone talking like we always do (albeit less often now) for hours. And when we stopped talking I realised that while she felt near, the near friends just seemed so very far away. And now I am back to being surprised - this time though at just how overwhelmed I am. So full circle I guess for now, but tomorrow will be better.

Silence

Sometimes the best sounds are quiet house sounds. The rain softly hitting the tin roof. The ticking of the cuckoo clock.

The fridge hums as the rain falls a little harder (and louder). And I'm lost in my thoughts just long enough to wish daydreams were real.

Fish with an overbite

As the best person I know from Dubbo town would say... 'makes it hard to eat an apple'.

Midweek Cocktail

This time. Last week. Cocktails.

In the bath.

What of it?

For the record, whiskey on ice with a generous squeeze of fresh blood orange.

Overheard on a flight back to Canberra

There are all these new places in Canberra...like ten before two.

What's that?

It's a coffee place near the city.

Is it full of those hipsters??

Yes (he nods earnestly whilst pulling out the latest copy of quarterly essay*). It's a lot like... a Melbourne cafe.

With that he flicks opens the quarterly essay and pushes up his glasses - the conversation done. And all of a sudden it became apparent we actually have a hipster in our midst, seated in 3A. The classic Canberra intellectual hipster, such a political nerd that they don't actually recognise themselves as being hip...but they are in their own way and should be approached with caution.

* Full disclosure. I have a copy of quarterly essay on my coffee table. I haven't actually read it, I just keep it there for the optics.

Bike riding to work attire - it is a tricky thing

So this morning I was happy with my work and cycle attire. Skirt below the knee and quite full, so easy to cycle in. Easy to cycle in with the wind. Against the wind a different story. Full skirt balloons in the wind and over 8 k's, posed quite the challenge. I'm not sure if you have to see proof, but I did take a photo (before I spent the rest of the ride with one hand firmly holding my skirt down), so you might as well see the degree of difficulty faced. On the plus side, the other picture shows what a glorious day it was for a bike ride!

The prettiest tarp in Canberra town

Somehow, me and the gypsy girl - we always manage to get things done even if it is a little unconventional...like this shabby chic tarpaulin.

Twitter quandary

I hate time travel (but I don't mind turtles).
