So what do you do when you are birthdaying alone? Find the best Spanish tapas bar run by a British chef located in chinatown Singapore. I give you Esquina.
I was totally comfortable perched on the bar, listening to a soundtrack not dissimilar to one I'd play during a dinner party. Bliss. Cookbooks on display cover the titles I have at home, with these things pointing to me having made the perfect restaurant choice. Add to the mix a great special of slow roasted pork, some calamari all washed down with and a glass of sherry followed by a sneaky glass (or two) of cava and it couldn't have been better!
People watching at its finest. The girl next to me who was friends with all the staff. A wonderful flirt, but with that edge of someone desperately trying to fit in. The couple next to me...the lady who was just all glamour in a down-low European way and her partner who looked like a writer. Kind of crumpled and cool. And me. God knows what they all thought of me, watching the night unfold - with a wry smile, a light heart and the sort of smug sense of contentment you get when it all works out all right.
